Accretion-erosion conversion in the subaqueous Yangtze Delta in response to fluvial sediment decline

چکیده

Identifying the pattern of delta morphological change under decreasing sediment flux due to dam construction is essential for sustainable management in such densely populated coastal areas. In this study, we investigated processes Yangtze mouth bar and prodelta based on bathymetric data a decadal-interannual scale (1958, 1978, 1997, 2002, 2007, 2010, 2013 2015). We found that strong accretion (205.1 Mm3 yr?1) occurred during 1958–1978, when high load (465 Mt was supplied by Yangtze. Afterwards, net accumulation rate decreased 31.9 yr?1 1978–1997 114.6 1997–2002 as result riverine loads 390 314 yr?1, respectively. Surprisingly, increased 130.8 2002–2007, though sharply 177 yr?1. This anomaly attributed training walls within area, which induced significant groyne-sheltered areas nearby regions. Along with further decrease load, entire study area converted erosion ?200.4 2007–2010 ?152.2 2010–2013. Stronger former period partly caused intensive dredging activities area. The critical discharge retain estimated be ca. 218 If deducting impacts estuarine engineering projects accretion/erosion 1997–2010, adjusted 234 combination previously reported accretion-erosion conversion elsewhere Delta, inferred most portion subaqueous has likely from response fluvial decline, showed latest among portions delta. Integrated assessment adaptive strategies are urgently required Delta survive coming erosional stage.

Impact of dams on Yangtze River sediment supply to the sea and delta intertidal wetland response

[1] On the basis of estimates of sediment accumulation in reservoirs, the impact of 50,000 dams on sediment supply and intertidal wetland response in the Yangtze River catchment is examined. The total storage capacity of reservoirs is 200 10 m, or 22% of the Yangtze annual runoff. The sediment accumulation rate in reservoirs has increased from 0 in 1950 to >850 10 t/yr in 2003. Although sedimen...

New evidence of Yangtze delta recession after closing of the Three Gorges Dam

Many deltas are likely undergoing net erosion because of rapid decreases in riverine sediment supply and rising global sea levels. However, detecting erosion in subaqueous deltas is usually difficult because of the lack of bathymetric data. In this study, by comparing bathymetric data between 1981 and 2012 and surficial sediment grain sizes from the Yangtze subaqueous delta front over the last ...

A Decision Support Framework for the Risk Assessment of Coastal Erosion in the Yangtze Delta

Coastal erosion is an issue of widespread concern. As one of the most important economic regions in China, the coast of the Yangtze Delta has been showing a trend towards erosion with global warming and the increasing human activities in the catchment and its estuary. Currently, most published studies about coastal erosion in the area focused on the causes and types of erosion. This paper prese...

Fluvial suspended sediment transport and mechanical erosion in the Maghreb ( North Africa ) *

Probst & Amiotte Suchet (1992) are to be complimented on their valuable contribution to the investigation of erosion in the Maghreb (North Africa). As noted by the authors, the study of erosion at the global scale has neglected the Maghreb region and their recent paper draws attention to the intensity of sediment loss in this area. Their statistical analysis of a large body of suspended sedimen...
